Three things people don’t know about you?

That I am deeply spiritual despite being irreligious, that I am scared of heights, that I still get butterflies in stomach when a flight runs into a turbulence even after many years of flying.

What’s your greatest fear?

Apart from the silly fears mentioned above, at a fundamental level I am not scared of anything.

What is your greatest achievement?

I celebrate all my modest achievements. I never tried to grade them.

High point of your life?

I try to remain on the high all the time.

Low point of your life

I am a diehard optimist who is perpetually hopeful. In fact a low point doesn't exist for me.

Which living person do you most admire?

Dalai Lama. Because of his simplicity and compassion.

Atticus Finch from 'To Kill A Mocking Bird' by Harper Lee.

There are many books; it is difficult to restrict to a few.

Ben-Hur, McKenna's Gold, Schindler's List, Chemmeen, and Dosti

One Superpower you wish you had?

Power to tele transport oneself.

Your epitaph would read? /Last line in your biography would be?

He lived a contented life remaining ever grateful for whatever that came on his way.

If you had a time machine to take you back to any country and any time period, where would you choose to be for your childhood, adolosent , adult life and silver years?

"For the childhood, I would like to return to the same small hamlet in north Kerala where I grew up. For the adult years, I would like to lead a nomadic life as the one I have already lived. For the silver years, I would like to live in the Maipo Valley, off Santiago, between the river and a vineyard."

If you could acquire any talent, what would it be?

I would like to be an accomplished singer.

Which book you wish you had written ?

I have already written the book I wanted to write - 'The Aspirant'.

I think you are right.

Do you have a writing ritual / superstition?

Normally late afternoon suits me the best. I normally key in, but when I have a rush of ideas, I start writing fast making it almost illegible.

What’s your guilty reading pleasure?

I can read any number of comics.

Do you have one sentence of advice for new writers?

Everyone has a story to tell. So, write, write and write.

Mathew Joseph was born in central Kerala and after having lived and worked in most parts of India, he has moved to Bangalore where he lives currently. He spent his teenage years aspiring to become a Carmelite monk, before embarking up on a career in civil service. He holds two degrees, one in philosophy, and another in psychology in addition to a master’s in business administration. He is a former civil servant and an ardent nature lover and avid traveler.
