BOOK REVIEW: CON KABIR

9789352015542

The plot and the storyline was interesting. The execution was fine. Characters were built nicely. The book was gripping, and it did not take me much time to read it, once I picked it up.

Narration was poor. I am seriously disappointed with the editing(I doubt if it was even edited!). Besides glitches in sentence formations, there were spelling and punctuation errors.

The title could also have been better!

When I picked up the book, I noticed that the description of this book on the publisher’s was not grammatically appealing, and immediately mailed them. But such errors are repeated throughout the actual book, and are unacceptable(especially to a grammar freak like me :p )!

The author has filled one of the page with Punjabi and Hindi sentences, in Roman script! That page was unreadable for me! (This has happened with a second book this month!)

Still, you can give it a shot if you are interesting in thrillers which involve cons, betrayal , conspiracies and action!

Book Review : Con Kabir by Anonymous

Book- Con Kabir

Author- Anonymous

Editor- Cora Bhatia

Genre- Fiction (Suspense/Thriller)

Publisher- Leadstart Publishing and Frog Books

Blurb-

Whenever evil rule, God comes as a saviour and if he can’t, a messenger is sent. There are a series of cons happening in different areas which have created quite a buzz in the society.

Everyone is searching the conman who is described differently by everyone.

There is a whole new face which is needed to be revealed but how things will be sorted in this complex situation? How the reality will come in front? When the series of suspense will end and what will be the end result?

Title-

The title must be a mirror to the story and Con Kabir suited things pretty well. Anyone can get abundant hints from the name that what and where the story will take them but the name is just a part. I was really excited with the name itself and I was not disappointed as I edged ahead. An apt title I must say.

Cover-

The images on the cover are very fresh and exuberant. They have all the elements which are mentioned in the book. The leading face of the cover, the man with beard and glares is quite impressive to look at. He symbolizes the protagonist well (if that is what it is meant to). The two young boys were the much needed faces because they are the source of things. I was highly impressed when I added two and two to make four.

Characters-

There are so many characters in the novel that one gets highly involved in the tale. It’s just like that long suspense movies in which every small character helps the main leads to take the story ahead. The story reached its peak just because of these small characters that were always eager to play their part and didn’t hesitate coming in between from time to time. Apart from these, the main leads were doing their part extraordinarily well, they had a lot to show the readers and thus they were given the main stage quite openly. I liked one fact about the characters that the minor and major leads changed roles when it came to different chapters, in one chapter you have one person taking the story ahead and in the other chapter there is a whole new face. This made the story very fresh and serene.

If I were to choose some unforgettable characters then they would be Kabir, Ali and Sandy; I chose these characters because they were the most versatile ones.

Narration-

The narration being in the third person suited the suspense quite well. It was smooth and even the change in scenes within the chapters were superbly handled due to this. The different days and years were mentioned to avoid any confusion and thank God for that. The story was clear in front of the author and that is the sole reason of such a book.

Reviews-

A great starts leads to best results. Con Kabir had the potential to tell the readers from the very start that there are better things in the book which have the power to hold your interest. It makes you sure that you are going to read something interesting. There are vivid characters. There is a vast difference when it comes to characterization. The two leads which are introduced in the start are two different poles.

The book has a lot of things which were unheard for me. If the world functions in the way the author mentions then we need a lot of conman like Kabir in our locality. It was a treat to read a lot of fresh things in the coming chapters. The book had external information at many turns, but the author had incorporated things in such a manner that even newness felt nice. New ideologies and a perfect base to build up something big, is done by the author, which worked for him in the long run.

I loved the two con incidents mentioned in the book. The con of Punjab was hilarious. Sharpest brains can also fall in holes; the message was quite clear from the story of Sandy. Well, I haven’t read much stories of a conman thus I found all this really nice. The next con showed the doom of a NRI. It was well written and executed by the writer like the first one. So, it was great show to watch.

Mr. Malik proves to be the perfect strand. He was responsible for the completion of the story. So I found his character of great importance in the tale. I was in doubt when I was reading the last chapters of the book. I really needed to know how some things happened and why they happened in the first place. Like the plane crash, what happened exactly after Kabir met Mr. Shah? I can decode things my way but I really wanted the author to tell me that but he/she didn’t bother to write even a line indicating what all he meant. My fantasies are running wildly to find the answers.

The character of Ali has a lot to say in the end. I was in shock to read what he had to say. Sometimes you think that you know the story as you are on the last chapter but the writer has planned more than what you can imagine. The story was a treat to read, as it had some unique wow factors. But at the same time it created questions in my mind which I don’t want, after the novel is completed. The sub-title of the novel- Experience the other side of terrorism was well played within the novel. It was an intelligent book with a lot of fineness and richness.

Eye-catchers-

· “Set priorities, have patience, add passion and aim for perfection.”

· “…until the time people do not respect the religion of others, there will be no peace.”

Turn-on’s-

The best part about this book is the subject matter. Very rarely you see a novel covering such topics which Con Kabir has covered. The hard work of author is visible in the book; he might have put a lot of stress while making such complex plan. The small details (no matter they are true or not) were really holding the book together.

Turn-off’s-

The only problem I have is with the ending chapters. If and only if the author had tried to make things a bit more clear while telling the ending, things would have reached different tangents.

Recommendation-

No matter you like suspense or not, this one is worth giving a try.

BLURB ~

Story is about two friends, protagonist Kabir who is from India and Ali who is from Pakistan. Both spent their childhood days in Australia. After completing his higher secondary education from Australia, Kabir went to Europe for his further studies. After 10 years Kabir is a secret service agent of Indian Government and Ali is an international most wanted terrorist. Now the book is about why and how Kabir will save his friend who is terrorist now.

BOOK REVIEW ~

If you are a great fan of Bollywood Masala , this is the book for you! The story seems to be in typical bollywood shtyle… Two best friends from childhood turning out to be in opposite shade of life,  You will find Kabir, a secret service agent of Indian Government on a secret mission which ONLY his boss knows, A con man who cons only NRIs, conning them like its a piece of cake; Villains are not supposed to grow brains, eh!? or maybe the conning skills are too damn good; in either ways it was indeed interesting.

It puts light on the topics like terrorism , social differences , ZIONISM ( new to me and i appreciate it ) and considerable reasons to it. I really liked the quote coined as favorite of kabir –  ” Set priorities, have patience, add passion and aim for perfection “

If you would like to check out its trailer here it is –

Even though i say its bollywood style there is no sexy heroine in it for the hero to just romance around but the whole focus is on the plot and concept it follows, which i found good about it. There are few bumps in the language , framing of the sentences but it is negligible i guess. The plot is in a way predictable as its blurb or about the book is too revealing.

I would rate this book 3.5 , for it stands out from the common book trends and have done a good job which is to appreciated.

Con Kabir Book Review

Con Kabir by Anonymous is the parable of a con man, who does so with a novel intent in mind as he knows, the world is treacherous, deceptive and hide vortices and eddies beneath the surface with a book depicting the vast and tumultuous landscapes to the placid smoothness of the terrains of the human mind.

The plot builds on a raging con game being registered in the nation by Kabir, a secret service officer of the Indian government pretending sometimes as a tourist guide, sometimes a real estate agent, target primarily NRIs, who will make them deem he is an old buddy that they have not seen in years and get his hands on their wealth, who finally reveals that all of his cons were set up to save the life of a terrorist from Pakistan, Ali, who spent their childhood days in Australia.

The scams range from street cons, business cons, internet cons and a few home improvement cons with the twist in this con game happens when ACP Malik, the investigating police officer, gets prior strong proof about the subsequently designed break-in of that con man. On the other hand, he realises that all the clues seem to be coming just to him.

Similarly it is changeable, shifting and treacherous the protagonist of this novel, a confidant man who, under false and countless spoils, manages to win the trust of the rich NRIs and bring to the surface the submerged dark sides, the deepest and unspoken desires.

This thriller is full of addictive pathos, as to be a concentration of adrenaline gripping from first page to last. What is certain is that the writer was able to create a narrative thick of events, all significant and shocking. The main characters are humanized and shown to the player with not only the dark side of their characters, but also with the weaknesses present in them, who then appear normal in their peculiarities.

The most interesting aspect of the book, beyond the central story is the writer of the story who advances in the psychology of the characters, major or otherwise. Each one has a precise and decisive role with each one dragging behind not only their personality and values, but also their weaknesses and the dishonest ways.

The journey that the author stages proves so an allegorical path to multiple layers of the human mind, which can only end in the disguise, concealment, and the self-revelations with this strong novel, is clearly directed at the heart of our contemporary society, represented by a group of men, at least in appearance, with the best intentions in the world.

In this thriller, there’s a lot of action and many sudden changes all told through a sliding writing, not concocted, though at times the plot is so full of twists to seem unreal, but it is still a novel. The book is an enjoyable thriller with a fast pace that keeps the reader hooked till the end.

The sublime prose and the ability to dig deep into the characters probe the limits of human nature and investigate the essence of evil, giving the reader an experience that touches enlightenment, the state of grace which any novel constantly aspire. I wonder if the writer or the publisher is not already thinking about a sequel with the same shrewd protagonist who has enthralled with his story in this novel.
