Blurb- Aryaveer has always been the shield and armor of Bhupala kingdom, ever since he joined the army. His life takes a mysterious turn when he falls in love with Meera, a princess by birth, caught in the whirlwind of conspiracies and hunted by many. ‘I had been trapped in a nightmare for all these years, and then you came and released me from the cage of a painful sleep.’Review-The opening of the novel is tragic. It starts with a war which leads to the inevitable end of King Ananthabheeman’s dynasty. The time period in which the plot has been set is-late summer of 1315 AD.The beginning is quite confusing as so many new characters get introduced. From the second chapter, the plot takes a turn to early winter of 1323 AD at Bhupala Kingdom.Aryaveer is the main protagonist, so the title is kept in accordance with him. He is well-known for his strong physique and is famous for his skills. Meera, who is described as a cursed princess, is another central character of the novel . It is believed that the milk of human kindness can be evoked by essential love and care. Meera’s love for Aryaveer brings about a dynamic change in Aryaveer ‘s character. The transformation in Aryaveer’s character saves the entire Bhupala Kingdom, from seeing its end.
As the novel is set in thousands and thousands years ago, there are many historical elements in it. At times, the story gets boring because I cannot relate myself to the characters. However, this is an excellent attempt of the author to write something out of the trend. This is not a typical love story which we get to read by Indian authors today.
Prince Indra is another interesting character, who believes himself to be a poet and wants to stay away from the throne. At the end,he realizes, there is no escape from this and declares himself as the new king of Bhupala Kingdom. This novel gives tribute to the loyalty of Ramdas, friendship of King Dhrupad and Chandrasenu; and guidance of Guruji. Over the centuries, things have changed,so does the friendship. I liked the author’s imagination. Her description gives every inch of details. Sometimes, it makes me hard to believe that somebody living in 21st century has attempted to write something very unusual and different. This novel is surely going to challenge one’s own taste and reading skills.

ARYAVEER- The Guardian of Dakshin Durgh
Aryaveer: The Guardian of Dakshin Durg by Mary John Williams is a tale filled with adventure and mystery. With an intricately woven plot, the book tells us the love story of Aryaveer (a fearless warrior) and Meera (a princess trapped in a web of conspiracies). The story-line has a good number of twists and turns. The plot of this historical romance not only grabs the attention of the readers from the first page itself, but also holds the same till the last page. The pace of the story-line is neither too fast nor too slow.
Let us turn our attention to the story-line. Aryaveer, the Army General of Bhupala kingdom, is one of the main reasons behind the supremacy of this kingdom. He is known for his hard-hearted nature. However, his life takes a turn when he falls in love with Meera, a princess of a different kingdom. Her company gradually detaches his heart from the brutalities of war and slaughter. Though Meera is a princess by birth, her own father is after her life. Aryaveer gives her a shelter in his house and tries to protect her from the evil eyes of the world. In the meanwhile, prince Indra (the heir to the throne of Bhupala kingdom) vanishes without a trace and this leaves the king infuriated. The wounded king hatches a noxious plan to become the emperor of India. The duty of executing this plan falls on the shoulders of Aryaveer. Now, Aryaveer is in a fix. He has to save his love from her father. At the same time, he has to carry out the deadly plans of the king. Will Aryaveer help the king to become the emperor of India, or will he attempt to shield his love from the dim whirlwind of voracity and hate? Read the book to know the answers of these fascinating questions.
The characters of this book instantly make a place in your heart. The main protagonists of this novel are deeply complex but wonderful people who attempt to advance through a rough and unfair world. However, they do it while keeping their honour and respectability in place. Aryaveer is a valiant man. While he had a rough childhood, he is lethal on the battleground. He is ruthless and ready to do whatever he needs to do to win. At the same time, he is sympathetic, reasonable and decent off the battlefield. Meera, on the other hand, is a spirited heroine who is both beautiful and tender-hearted. In addition to these main characters, there are a number of other characters who leave an impression on your heart. In particular, I would like to mention about the character of Dharmishta. The twisted fate of this character is the saddest part of this book. According to me, some more ink should have been spent in writing about her. Her character appears in the book, makes an impression on you, and suddenly meets a tragic death. She certainly deserved more space in the book.
The first thing that lures you towards this book is its captivating cover. It certainly lured me in. It is beautifully done. The blurb is ok but could have been more enticing. The ending of this book is more than satisfactory but it is not the one that will blow your mind away. In the end, I feel that this book has all the ingredients to appeal a number of readers.

BOOK REVIEW: ARYAVEER
The Guardian of Dakshin Durgh
Author: Mary John Williams
Aryaveer has always been the shield and armour of Bhupala kingdom, ever since he joined the army. The pain of betrayal that he nurtures in his heart from his childhood turns him into a strong, brave and ruthless warrior. In 1315 AD, following the death of their army General, Aryaveer leads his soldiers to victory by capturing the impenetrable fort of Udaygiri, thus putting an end to the prolonged war. Pleased by his valor and strength, King Mahindra appoints him as the new Army General. Under his leadership, Bhupala kingdom rises into a super power, spreading across the length and breadth of peninsular India[Dakshin Durgh].
His life takes a mysterious turn when he falls in love with Meera, a princess by birth, caught in the whirlwind of conspiracies and hunted by many. She tames his aggression and takes his heart away from war and bloodshed.
In the meanwhile the disappearance of prince Indra, the only heir to the throne of Bhupala kingdom, irks king Mahindra. The ego dented king, hatches a noxious plan to become the emperor of India and entrusts Aryaveer with the duty of executing his plans.
Will Aryaveer once again walk on the war torn path for his king, or will he try to protect his castle of love from the dark tempest of greed and hatredness?
This book is surprisingly very good. It is hard to believe that this is the author’s first book. The plot is intricately woven and all the characters are well sketched out.
I really liked the book cover, especially the fact that the man’s face is hidden, it adds to the mystery and lures you in. Definitely one of the better covers that I have been seeing these days.
One of the first characters we meet is an Army General who is conversing with the king. I loved the fact that the author conspicuously mentions ‘she’ for the general, and then it hits you, the general is a female! We then go on to find out how much of an awesome person Dharmishta is. My only grievance with this book is that Dharmishta should have had more space…I loved her!
One more aspect of this book that I really liked is how the author writes war scenes. She writes the war from point of view of both the sides, so we, as readers, have a much better understanding of what is going on and thus become much more invested in the storyline.
The protagonist of this novel, Aryaveer believes in doing the right thing and does not give in to what people want him to do, even though if he gives in no one would bat an eyelid, this comes out strongly with what happened to the Dharmishta episode. I do not want to say much more, as it would spoil it for those who have not read this book, but the decision that Aryaveer took, really made me respect him.
As you might have already noticed I am writing of these characters as “people”, because the author has displayed a wonderful writing ability which paints a picture in your mind. So you are there when this whole thing is happening and the characters are more than just characters, they are flesh and blood.
While there were some editing mistakes like spacing issues, punctuation issues, etc they were not that much of a hinderance as the overall story line was amazing. But, the author could look into this in her next book.
While this is predominantly an action book, the romance angle is so heartwarming. The romance is so beautifully merged with the action, the balance between both is just perfect.
Totally a book worth a read!
