What inspired you to start writing?
I have been writing since I was 10 years of age. I would record the day-to-day events in my diary, and that perhaps may have kickstarted the writing habit in me. As I grew older, I matured into writing short stories and features. As a film journalist back in 2003, I covered a lot of features, interviews, and people stories. I try to express my feelings and pen down my dreamy thoughts through my writings. Sometimes, the purpose is to give out a very strong opinion on things which I may not really attempt in real (while conversing with people).
What did you like to read when you were a girl?
I loved reading classics! Jane Austen was/is my absolute favorite.
What is the greatest challenge in writing a book?
Short attention span of people, and the absolute neglect towards reading books, is the biggest challenge for any writer. I have taken this challenge head-on and I am trying to woo people back into reading. I have used a good number of illustrations, dialogues, and dollops of romantic moments in my book, which I hope will sustain the interest levels of the readers.
How much research do you do before writing the book?
I spent around 1-2 months researching on the different apps available in the market, before I started writing my current book (which centers around the relationships that people form on the virtual apps). However, most of my writings veer around real incidents (that I may have been a part of or would have seen from close quarters). I have been lucky enough to travel a lot, and a lot of these experiences finds its way into my writings.
What motivated you to write the book “Love Apptually”?
I always wanted to write a romantic novel. The idea of meeting someone online on an app and falling in love, seemed like a very fresh subject to me. Also, since a lot of people use apps in today’s times, I thought it would make for an interesting topic for people to read about.
Can you tell us more about your latest book “Love Apptually”?
“Love Apptually“s a love story about two people who meet online and fall in love. What makes the book different from the other novels is that it has a lot of Bollywood references, and is written in first person (from the girl’s perspective). It questions the concept of virtual dating and whether or not it can lead to a “real” or a “stable” relationship.
How did you come up with the idea of writing romantic fiction genre book?
Romance is my favorite genre. It is something that really livens up my heart and has me twirl around, and squeak in delight (I love the part where the boy and the girl end up being together for life!) So obviously, my first book had to be a romantic one!
Who are your favourite authors?
I love literature of the 18th and 19th century. All my favorite authors are from that era including Georeg Elliot, Leo Tolstoy, Emily Bronte, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Emile Zola, D.H. Lawrence and the likes.
How much time do you dedicate to writing on a daily basis?
I spend at least half an hour every day to write.
What words of wisdom would you like to give to aspiring writers?
To never stop dreaming and never stop writing!
